Research Center on Education
The Research Centre on Education (CIEd) is a multidisciplinary Research Unit of the Institute of Education, UMinho, whose mission is to conduct educational research as a means of participating in the transformation of the lives of individuals and communities.
Since 1976, research conducted at the Centre focuses on children, youth, adults, and elder, in a variety of social settings and types of communities, taking into consideration the diverse cultural and social constraints and resources that impact on learning, envisioning that all citizens are equally prepared to participate actively and critically in the society.
CIEd's mission is guided by pivotal concerns such as: quality and internationalisation, impact and outreach as well as the training of young researchers.
CIEd’s goals and actions weave together to achieve CIEd superior mission: to ensure better learnings for better futures.
Anticipating futures and focusing on diversities, inequalities, equity, inclusion, innovation, and sustainable development, CIEd's goals are:
> To produce in depth knowledge and understanding about education and training policies, learning environments, pedagogical processes, devices and resources, for equity, justice, inclusion and lifelong learning in the multifaceted world of multiliteracies that characterise today’s semiotic and graphocentered economies;
> To produce knowledge about the best teaching strategies to educate individuals and communities, namely for sustainable development, as a means to contribute to an active, responsible and informed citizenship, as well as to the promotion of personal and social well being;
> To ensure inclusive and equitable research-based quality education and the promotion of lifelong learning opportunities for all;
> To use educational research to respond to societal challenges, supporting inclusive, innovative and reflective societies.
As a means of interacting with society, and to ensure the social relevance of its research results, CIEd hosts this Observatory, a project that is developed in an action-research perspective, based on a training logic, with the participation of researchers who share their interest in self-assessment in the context of the external evaluation of schools.
