Description

The XVII Summer Course 2024, Paulo Freire: from the Pedagogy of the Oppressed to the Pedagogy of Autonomy, will be held on July 11, 12 and 13, promoted by the Department of Social Sciences of Education and the Education Research Center of the Institute of Education of the University of Minho.
The teaching team is made up of: Licínio Lima [Coord.], Almerindo Afonso and Fátima Antunes

As one of the most important pedagogues of the 20th century, whose political pedagogy was seminal to the creation of critical pedagogy, it is understood that his vast body of work – including the magnum opus Pedagogy of the Oppressed and the last and celebrated book on Pedagogy of Autonomy, which he published in 1996 -, represents an unavoidable theoretical reference, to be known and debated by teachers and educators, specialists in education, leaders of educational organizations and technicians, with varied backgrounds, but who work in education and training institutions, or with educational valences.

The course will be based on the study of primary sources and, based on these, will call on secondary sources from important international specialists in Freire’s work, seeking to provide an in-depth and wide-ranging view, not only of the texts that the author bequeathed to us, but also of his educational and pedagogical work, carried out in different parts of the world.
The topicality of Freire’s thought and work will be the subject of debate based on a political sociology of education, through presentations by the trainers and, above all, through the work carried out by the participants, organized into thematic workshops.
